Resilience | Revival | Bamboo Gang

Meet Brother Guang from the Bamboo Gang, a friend from Taoyuan City’s Fuxing District.

This sickle represents the livelihoods of those in the mountains, the cultural significance of bamboo in the Atayal community, and the importance of forest conservation and carbon neutrality.

While many are aware that Taiwan’s bamboo products come from Zhushan, and that bamboo utensils are often replaced by plastic or cheaper imports, fewer know that bamboo from Taoyuan and Hsinchu also contributes to Japan’s esteemed kendo practice. Even less known is how bamboo forest management is closely linked to local regeneration, mountain disaster prevention, smart energy solutions, and sustainable environments.

In the mountains, we join forces with the Bamboo Gang, navigating the dense bamboo forests with sickles and chainsaws. Together, we carve out a path for community development and resilient villages, driven by strength and determination.

The 2022 University Social Responsibility (USR) Expo will take place on November 19-20 at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. This year’s event will feature 196 projects from 91 universities, showcasing their achievements through exhibitions, photography, and short films. Attendees can enjoy a variety of activities, including themed lectures, a “Farm-to-Table” experience, USR talks and performances, interactive photo booths, and more.

Participants can engage in various activities to earn delightful gifts and have a chance to win exciting prizes such as a MacBook Air or Nintendo Switch through a popular vote.

We warmly invite everyone to join us in celebrating the annual USR Expo and exploring the impactful work of our universities!

To promote sustainable bamboo forest management and support the growth of Taiwan’s bamboo industry, the “Sustainable Fuxing” USR team from National Central University has partnered with the Hsinchu Forest District Office, Huiyou Creative Co., Ltd., the Fuxing Bamboo Industry Development Association, and You Shun Bamboo Industry Co., Ltd. Together, they have organized the special exhibition Building the Future with Bamboo: A Documentary on Bamboo Forest Management. This event will take place at the Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area Visitor Center from September 23 to October 23, 2022.

We warmly invite everyone to explore the future of Taiwan’s bamboo industry and join us in taking steps toward sustainable forest conservation and development!

As the USR (University Social Responsibility) program enters its fourth year, universities are called to bridge academic theory with real-world dialogue. This year’s theme, “Universities in Support, Local Resonance,” brings together the second cohort of USR grant teams along with socially responsible enterprises, NGOs, NPOs, and community organizations.

The USR Online Expo highlights the unique, rich, and authentic cultural atmosphere and educational ecosystem created through the interactions and dialogues between universities and their communities. The expo aims to display the ambition and progress of participating schools in areas.
