From ancient times to the present, bamboo has been intricately woven into the daily lives of the people in Taiwan, playing a crucial role in our food, clothing, housing, and transportation. At one point, the bamboo industry brought an annual export value of over NT$70 million to Taiwan’s economy. However, while Taiwanese people consume and utilize bamboo, not everyone is familiar with its varieties and characteristics.

In light of the emerging green trends in the bamboo industry, “Feng Nian” interviewed Dr. Chen Cai-Hui, a former researcher at the Forestry Research Institute of the Council of Agriculture, who has long studied bamboo forest resources and currently serves as a director of the Chinese Forestry Society. Dr. Chen offers insights into bamboo’s growth characteristics, the environmental benefits of bamboo forests, and the key principles of sustainable bamboo harvesting, such as “leave three and take four.” His research not only aims to dispel misconceptions about bamboo but also outlines a direction for sustainable management of Taiwan’s bamboo forests, laying a solid foundation for the future of the bamboo industry.
