The headmaster of Chang Hsing Primary School invited us and the children to Shimen Reservoir for a cultural tour of the Dahan River. Although Shimen Reservoir is a crucial water source in northern Taiwan, few people know it well. We embarked from Pine Forest Dock and visited Jiangmu Island, crossing the Xikou Suspension Bridge. The reservoir’s waters sparkled in the sunlight, and a gentle breeze made the boat ride pleasant. The guides and elders passionately shared the history and beauty of Shimen Reservoir, while the children enthusiastically enjoyed the lively trip.
On the return trip, one of the elders led us in a song. Master Lin Ming-Foo, a living treasure, is one of the few who can sing in the ancient Atayal dialect. His powerful, unaccompanied voice was both grand and touching, full of emotion and warmth. Even though we didn’t understand the lyrics, we were told that the song recounts the origins and history of the Atayal tribe.
The children softly sang popular TikTok songs on one side of the boat, creating a blend of traditional ancient chants and modern tunes. The headmaster was moved to tears by the elders’ precious singing while the teachers smiled at the innocent and joyful children. It was a touching scene that held everyone’s attention.
Traditional culture, which we hold dear as precious history, raises questions about its significance for future generations. Will these children understand the meaning of the ancient Atayal songs when they grow up? We don’t know. But at this moment, the blending of the old and new, sometimes merging, sometimes distinct, creates the most beautiful and precious scene.
