The winding mountain road leads us to Kao Yi Primary School in Fuxing District for the Christmas day event. It was lunch time when we arrived. The sky was dark but the atmosphere was lit up by the passion of the participants. I know that the cloudy sky cannot cover the passion of all.
Then everything came all so sudden. The passionate and straightforward sister had already lined up the local residents when the setting of the booth was just half completed. They were very eager and could not wait until the completion of the setup of the booth, and they just gathered in front of the booth. We could hardly launch the games we had prepared for this occasion but just lay the table cloth, post the banner, and set the promotional items quickly in order not to keep people waiting. We were then ready in 5 minutes. This sudden change just in a blink of eyes did not give us time to announce the rule of the game. I could not even have the chance to use my camera to shoot the faces of the people for memory. It was also so fast that more than half of our promotional materials were gone soon after the booth was set up. Nevertheless, the primary purpose of this visit is to interact with the local community on mountain for knowing each other better further to the education of basic disaster prevention knowledge. The rapid development just made everyone at a loss. But we have accomplished our goal successfully. This is a unique and meaningful interchange.
This was the first time I joined the event in the mountains after I joined the scheme. This experience is so novel to me. As compared with my living environment and the way I was brought up, I found out so different from my own experience of the past. First of all, the proportion of youth in mountain is much higher than I imagined. Previously, I engaged in internship training at the community development association in Hualien, and found out that the majority population of the community is the elderly, children, cats and dogs other than the Harvest Festival. But this time, the event was held on Sunday, and a lot of young people were around. The church is a participant in the event this time, which was different from the events in the past, which were participated by different age groups. I could feel that the tribal population was highly recognized for their religious belief. It was quite an experience for me to participate in the event organized by the church. Finally, I could observe that the local residents are accustomed to promotional events on the mountain hosted by different groups and organizations to share knowledge or tangible things. I was brought up in a rural school in central Taiwan and have received donations and aid in kind very often. But I realized that many university students have teamed up to visit the rural village and promote education after I studied at university. This is not so common in my upbringing. I could see that in the development of education, resources in terms of software were unevenly distributed between rural and urban areas beyond hardware, which is a topic that is worth discussing.
We could conveyed the knowledge of disaster prevention to the local residents in this event. For me, I found so many things which I have not come across in the past, which led me to feel that there will be more opportunities to be a part of this kind of events up in the mountain.
